REMO Stars were eliminated from the CAF Champions League today in South Africa after going down 2-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of their second preliminary round tie.

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions bowed out 7-1 on aggregate, having lost the home leg 5-1 in Abeokuta last week.

The return leg was a formality with such a wide-margin away victory, but 2016 African champions Mamelodi Sundowns still put on a show for their home fans.

Nuno Santos got the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League runners-up off to a fine start in Pretoria, netting in the 20th minute.

Sundowns doubled their lead one minute before half-time, with Peter Shalulile, who also scored in the first leg rout, netting off a corner kick.

Remo Stars avoided another embarrassing defeat by preventing more Sundowns goals in the second half at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

With the elimination of Remo Stars, the only Nigerian representatives left in the CAF Champions League are Rivers United, who advanced to the group phase on Saturday.

Kwara United and Abia Warriors were knocked out in the early rounds of the CAF Confederation Cup.
