A star-studded ensemble cast joins Cameron Diaz in her next Netflix action comedy movie, Bad Day, as it goes into production. After Cameron Diaz retired from acting, she returned in Netflix’s action comedy movie Back in Action alongside Jamie Foxx, where they played former spies whose lives are upended when they find themselves thrust back into the world of espionage they left behind.
In June, it was announced that Diaz had signed onto another action comedy film with Netflix’s Bad Day, which is directed by Jury Duty‘s Jake Szymanski and written by Laura Solo. The movie revolves around a single mother (Diaz) trying to keep her daughter happy during the worst day of her life.
Now, Netflix has announced that production for Bad Day has begun in New Jersey. Joining Diaz are Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker), Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Ed O’Neill (Modern Family), John Higgins (Saturday Night Live), Rhenzy Feliz (The Penguin), Jessica Belkin (The Hunting Wives), Emma Pearson (FBI: Most Wanted), Rob Corddry (Bookie), Mark Duplass (The Morning Show), Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog), Ayden Mayeri (Jackpot!), and K Callan (Knives Out).
Back in Action‘s cast featured many well-known stars in addition to Diaz and Foxx, including Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, and Andrew Scott. Bad Day is looking to rival that with the ensemble cast joining Diaz, who can help her make the action comedy Netflix’s next big hit movie.
Beau Bauman is one of the Bad Day‘s producers, reuniting with Diaz after they worked together on Back in Action. After its January debut, Back in Action went on to become Netflix’s seventh most-watched English-language movie of all time and spent seven weeks on the streamer’s global top 10 chart.
Reviews for Back in Action were not stellar, but the impressive streaming numbers bode well for Bad Day to find similar success on Netflix. Diaz’s return to acting proved to be a significant draw, and that momentum now has the chance to continue with Bad Day.
Diaz’s other upcoming movies include Shrek 5, where she will once again voice Fiona, and the Jonah Hill-directed dark comedy film Outcome, where she stars alongside Hill, Keanu Reeves, Matt Bomer, David Spade, and Laverne Cox.
Since filming for Bad Day is only just beginning, it may have a release window of late 2026 or early 2027, although nothing has been confirmed at this time. This would come before Shrek 5, which is slated for June 30, 2027.
