Marvel just gave Captain America one of his coolest costumes ever. In the brand-new 1776 #1, Steve Rogers travels back to the Revolutionary War, trading his classic star-spangled suit for something even older (yet honestly the best choice ever for Marvel’s most patriotic hero).

In 1776 #1, Captain America and a group of present-day Marvel heroes are sent back in time to stop Morgan Le Fey from helping the British Empire win the Revolutionary War. Arriving three days before the Battle of Saratoga, Steve finds himself leading the charge for freedom in a completely different century (and looking amazing while doing it).

Captain America & The Avengers Just Got Recruited Into The American Revolution

Seeking aid from the sorcerer Cagliostro, Benjamin Franklin’s astral spirit is able to make contact with Doctor Strange in the modern era to request some much-neeeded aid.

Recruiting a number of heroes including Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, Cyclops, Iron Man, and Clea, this team of heroes travels back in time via a portal maintained by both Doctor Strange and his magical predecessor over two centuries apart.

Once arriving in 1777, Clea provides her allies with new period-accurate attire. However, Captain America’s uniform absolutely takes the cake, trading in his usual for a blue Revolutionary War officer’s coat, complete with red accents, gold buttons, and a tri-corner hat.

The best part of Captain America’s new look is that he still has his vibranium shield strapped across his back, forever a symbol of liberty transcending any era (though it does feel more poignant here during the nation’s earliest days).

In this new issue and time period, Captain America is still the same man standing up to tyranny, though now the cause is to literally help define the meaning of American liberty itself, swapping Nazis for redcoats. This new unform couldn’t be more perfect, signifying Rogers as an American soldier, just like during his first war in WWII, and even in the present era with his suit, as an Avenger.

Despite the high stakes, one can imagine that Captain America is likely quite eager for the chance to fight for the birth of the nation and the American dream of liberty and freedom itself. It’s going to be very exciting to see Captain America (and his new threads) in action as this series continues.
