Christantus Uche was the standout performer, as he led Getafe to victory in their first game of the LaLiga season…
Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche scored one and assisted the other, as Getafe claimed a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo in their opening game of the LaLiga season, Soccernet.ng reports.
Uche was a standout performer for Getafe in his debut campaign last season. His performance saw him linked with clubs like Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Aston Villa, but none of them made an offer.
Coming into this season, he was handed the number 10 jersey, a signal that he would play an important role for them.
So, in their LaLiga opener against Celta Vigo at Estadio de Balaidos, the Super Eagles star was named in the starting eleven, set-up to play off the striker Adrian Liso.
The first half, was very tight, with both clubs canceling themselves out in the middle of the park. They couldn’t find a lot of joy in the final third.
The first half ended goalless, but it was in the second half that things opened up a bit. Just two minutes after the restart, Getafe got the lead courtesy of Adrian Liso.
The former Zaragoza man received a square ball from Uche, who made a fine run into the box, and drilled a well-placed shot into the bottom-right corner of ... to make it 1-0.
After scoring, Celta Vigo, who had the home advantage, pushed Getafe back and started pouring attack upon attack, but they failed to gind the vital incision.
They poured men forward, and left spaces at the back. Getafe soon made use of that opportunity, and it was Uche who punished them.
The Super Eagles star pounced on a long pass from Ismael Bekhoucha, bamboozled the two defenders marking him, dribbled past the goalkeeper, and sent the ball into an open net to make it 2-0.
Uche got another chance in the box late in the game, but his effort was stopped by a Celta Vigo defender.
Despite a late onslaught from the home side, Getafe held on to run out with the 1-0 victory.
