Channing Tatum addresses questions regarding the future of the comedic movie franchise Jump Street and whether we will see his character return.
In an interview with Variety, Tatum discusses a potential Jump Street 3, including a script that was “sincerely the best script I’ve ever read for me and Jonah [Hill],” but unfortunately never got made. The actor blames budgeting reasons and states:
“I don’t think it’ll ever happen. The problem is the overhead. It would cost as much as the actual budget of the film – if not more – because of all the producers involved. It’s just too top-heavy. It falls over every time.”
Tatum continued by claiming that he, Jonah Hill, and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller accepted smaller fees, but ultimately, producer Neal H. Moritz’s fee was far too great to justify. “Neal’s price for a producer fee is huge. And to be honest, that’s what’s killing it.”
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill starred in the Jump Street film series, which includes 21 Jump Street (2012) and 22 Jump Street (2014). The films follow two bumbling idiot cops, Jenko (played by Tatum) and Schmidt (played by Hill), who go undercover to expose criminal rings, but encounter hilarious and disastrous consequences.
The Jump Street films had great potential and received fantastic ratings for films of their respective genre. 21 Jump Street has an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and 22 Jump Street has an 84% rating. The films had a combined worldwide box office gross of over $534 million, and the first film is regarded as one of the top-grossing high school comedy films.
Despite this, a third installment never saw the light of day, yet fans continuously ask Tatum about its future potential. “I get asked more about ‘Jump Street 3’ than any other movie on the face of the planet that I’ve ever done,” Tatum shared in his interview.
Tatum places blame on film and television producer Moritz, who is known for his work on The Fast and Furious franchise, The Boys, and I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s unclear exactly what his fee is, but clearly it’s enough to justify scrapping what Tatum referred to as the “best script” he’s ever read.
Channing Tatum is focusing on other projects in the meantime with his new crime film Roofman, which premiered on October 10 and follows a former soldier and thief hiding inside a Toys “R” Us. The film has had positive feedback and has an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
