SUPER Eagles of Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle is confident that the team will not be hampered by Wilfred Ndidi’s absence when they play the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-offs final in Rabat, Morocco.
Ndidi received a yellow card in yesterday’s 4-1 win over Gabon, his second in the qualifying campaign, and is suspended for the final.
Chelle acknowledged that Ndidi is key to his plans but believes others will step up in the Besiktas midfielder’s absence.
“Ndidi is an important player for us. His experience, ability and leadership on the pitch are important for this team,” Chelle said.
“But we will manage the situation. We have a large squad of players and we will make changes.
“Ndidi is still here with us and will support the team mentally and with his presence.”
Chelle has two central midfielders who can effectively replace Ndidi: Brentford’s Frank Onyeka, who featured against Gabon in the play-offs semi-final, and Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika.
Meanwhile, Chelle’s options in central defence have been boosted, with Hull City’s Semi Ajayi eligible to play after missing the semi-final through suspension.
The Super Eagles need to beat DR Congo on Sunday to advance to the intercontinental play-offs in Mexico next March.
