CHELSEA and their players have decided to donate a portion of their FIFA Club World Cup prize money to the families of Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who were tragically killed in a car accident in July.
The decision comes after Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which earned the club approximately $114.6 million in prize money.
From this windfall, Chelsea had allocated $15.5 million to be distributed equally among the players who participated in the tournament, with each player set to receive over $500,000.
However, in a joint decision between the club and its players, according to the Athletic, Chelsea announced that an equal share of these bonuses will be donated to Jota’s family.
This means the family will receive approximately $500,000 from the bonus fund, representing an extraordinary financial gesture from the London club.
Before the final against PSG, Neto told reporters: “I just want to leave a message that this final is for him and his brother. It’s a really tough time for me.
“Difficult to speak as well but I hope I can do it for him and I want to dedicate this final to him and to his family and to show the support that in these difficult times we are all been through.”
After Chelsea’s victory, Neto fulfilled his promise, saying: “I said I would win it for Diogo and Andre. It’s an unbelievable win. The way we worked was unbelievable, the way we finished the tournament with this win – we are really happy.”
UEFA held moments of silence at matches following the accident, while Liverpool retired Jota’s number 20 jersey at all levels of the club.
Jota had been a key figure for both club and country, helping Liverpool win the 2024-25 Premier League title and contributing to Portugal’s UEFA Nations League victory in 2025.
His final goal came in Liverpool’s victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby on April 2, 2025.
