Singer Chike has shared a personal moment that shaped his relationship with the church and his faith. He recalled a period from years ago when attending a particular church became uncomfortable after encountering someone from his past.
He explained, “The woman leading the praise and worship was someone with whom I had a history. I couldn’t help but have flashbacks. She was worshipping, and I was left wondering, ‘Who is that?’” Chike said this encounter made him feel out of place, and he left the church after just a week.
Chike emphasised that his decision was not a rejection of Christianity. “It’s not because I don’t believe in God; I do,” he stated. He remembered a moment early in his career when he prayed for guidance while living in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend. “I just prayed, ‘God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me.’”
For Chike, the structure of the traditional church does not align with his lifestyle. “That’s why I don’t go to church. Church is not for me. There are things I enjoy that I wouldn’t be able to do in that setting,” he explained. He emphasized that what matters most, whether in public life or leadership, is treating others with respect.
“You just need to do right by people,” he stated. “Not necessarily live in a certain way. Just because I’m a Christian doesn’t mean I have to live a Christian life in a certain way.”
