Universal’s upcoming CoComelon: The Movie gets an official release date from the studio, confirming when the children’s show’s big screen debut is. CoComelon has maintained success as a children’s program since it debuted on YouTube as “checkgate” in September 2006. In that time, it’s become one of the most popular shows aimed at children across the world.
According to a report from Deadline, a film based on the series, CoComelon: The Movie, will be released on February 26, 2027. Just like the TV series it’s based on, the movie will be produced by Candle Media subsidiary Moonbug Entertainment. Flywheel Media will also join as a producer. As of writing, it’s the only movie releasing on that date.
Only three other movies have secured February 2027 release dates in the US as of writing. This includes the animated family film and potential competitor Ice Age: Boiling Point on February 5, the sixth Ice Age movie. On February 12, an untitled K-Pop movie directed by Benson Lee and a film adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel The Nightingale will be released.
It’s not surprising an animated children’s film based on CoComelon is coming to fruition, considering just how popular the series has become in its 19-year run. Rebranded to CoComelon in 2018, the show exists in multiple languages, and includes a multitude of spinoff material. This ranges from a Netflix series to varied merchandise, all reflective of the series’ global popularity.
The show was purchased by Candle Media in 2021, reportedly for $3 billion. Since then, it’s been run under Moonbug Entertainment, with an expansion into various spinoff TV shows and other products, including personalized video messages from Cameo and a line of Puma footwear and clothing. Being a global phenomenon will no doubt help the movie in its box office performance.
As of writing, no details about the film have been revealed. However, it may include some familiar faces from the franchise, such as JJ, Cody, and Nina. Given how much CoComelon has earned over the years, it would also make sense for the film’s budget to reflect the amount of success it’s had for nearly two decades.
Since CoComelon: The Movie is still a little over a year away, there likely won’t be more information about it for a bit more time. But, given just how much of a global phenomenon the series has been for years, it seems like a theatrical success story waiting to happen. Just how well its TV engagement will translate to movie theater seats, though, remains to be seen.
