Collapse of Nigeria’s democracy would result in global setback – Former lawmaker warns

A former lawmaker of the Nigerian Senate, Elisha Abbo has warned leaders across the country to ensure that they preserve the democracy of the country.

Speaking on African Independent Television’s Jigsaw, the former Adamawa lawmaker said that should Nigeria’s democracy collapse, Africa and the world at large would suffer.

Abbo said the ongoing crisis across various countries in Africa should serve as a wake-up call from Nigerian leaders.

His words, “It is a wake-up call for all of us in Nigeria to see Cameroon practising half democracy, one person being in power for 40 years; Chad practising half democracy with somebody being in power for over 40 something years and his son coming up to power.”

Continuing, Abbo said almost the same thing can be said of Niger Republic, Mali and Burkina Faso with military juntas.

He said neighbouring countries surrounding Nigeria in the West and Southern Africa are having one form of issue with their democracy and Nigerian leaders ought to be careful.

“If Nigeria’s democracy collapses, it would be a lot of setbacks for the whole of Africa and the whole world.

“And that is why International bodies like America, the European Union and Britain, should have an interest in this particular brand of government that they exported to Africa, whether it works or it doesn’t work.

Abbo further called for a reform of democracy in such a way that it can work for the African continent.
