The incident occurred this morning on the Kara Bridge section of the expressway, heading towards OPIC. The crash, which involved multiple trucks and cars, caused significant traffic congestion, bringing movement to a standstill on the ever-busy highway. While authorities have yet to confirm any fatalities, reports indicate that some individuals sustained injuries. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating: “We recorded an accident on the Kara bridge inward OPIC on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway involving multiple vehicles. LASTMA personnel and other emergency responders are currently on-site to rescue victims and clear the affected vehicles.” The agency also noted that the traffic backlog extended as far as the Otedola Bridge, urging motorists to remain patient. Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), LASTMA, and other emergency services were actively working to manage the scene and ease the traffic situation. The resulting gridlock reached as far as the Mowe area and the 7-Up bus stop in Lagos, forcing many commuters to walk long distances while others waited for movement to resume. In a follow-up update, LASTMA announced that some of the affected vehicles had been removed, and two lanes heading toward OPIC were reopened to traffic. Efforts to tow away an articulated truck involved in the crash were still ongoing at the time. This latest incident is one of many that have occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a route notorious for frequent crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles, despite undergoing recent upgrades.
