Confusion seems to be brewing in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Plateau State chapter as the tenure of the executive committee has expired without the conduct of a congress to elect new officers.

The four-year tenure, which began in September 2021, came to an end on Saturday, September 27, 2025

According to Punch, the process of electing a new leadership has been stalled by conflicting directives from the PDP national secretariat.

A letter from the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, dated September 24, 2025, announced ...ponement of the congress, however, another letter from the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, dated September 26, 2025, directed that the congress should proceed as scheduled.

As of Sunday, no state congress had been held to elect a new leadership team, nor had a caretaker committee been constituted to oversee the party’s affairs, leaving the Plateau PDP awaiting direction from the national secretariat.

Speaking with the aforementioned publication in Jos on Sunday, a member of the executive, Bitrus Golen, expressed concern over the development.

“For now, Plateau PDP has no leadership. We are just waiting to see what will happen next,” Golen said.

Golen said the party’s constitution requires a congress to be held to elect new exco members, a situation that had not taken place since there was no clear directive from the national secretariat.

He further stated, “Constitutionally, our tenure ended on Saturday, 27th September, and we ought to have held congress to elect a new exco.

“Constitutionally, too, we are eligible to contest and hold a position for another four years.”

A PDP chieftain in the state, Isaac Wadak, however, said, “Nothing confusing or contradictory about them (letters). The one is setting the process and line of authority straight, and the other might have been unofficial.”

Wadak, who congratulated the outgoing executive for their work and wished those eligible for a second tenure the best of luck, said the party was watching the development.

“I understand they (outgoing exco members) are eligible for a second term, except for some three or four positions.

“We are watching the development, as it’s being speculated that some members do not want them to contest. Never again should we go the caretaker or is it undertaker committee route on the Plateau again,” Wadak added.

Another party chieftain who did not want his name mentioned stressed the need to prevent a crisis within the party.

“We don’t want a crisis in Plateau PDP. I think everything should be done to prevent it and ensure that we don’t play into the hands of the opposition,” he said.
