Gunmen have reportedly killed a councillor at Owerre Ezukala community, Orumba South LGA, during the ongoing governorship election in Anambra State.

Naijaonpoint learnt that the councillor was shot dead at Owerre Ezukala Ward 1, while attempting to cast his vote.

According to Daily Post, a source, Iyke Orji who confirmed the incident said, “While voting in Owerre Ezukala Ward 1, unknown gunmen came in and shot a top person and left. The councillor of Owerre Ezukala was fatally shot by the men.”

However, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that there was no such report before him.

He said, “In fact, the state has been peaceful all along, and the atmosphere calm. There is no incident of violence in the state that I’m aware of at least for now.”

Meanwhile, the Obidient Movement on Saturday decried what it described as the heavy monetisation of the Anambra governorship election, alleging that money has become a major factor influencing voter decisions across the state.

Speaking with journalists, the National Coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, said the group had deployed structures across 176,000 polling units nationwide to monitor the exercise and document irregularities in real time.

Tanko expressed worry that vote buying has continued to undermine the credibility of elections in Nigeria.
