Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned the sentencing of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Naijaonpoint reports that the judge, who found Kanu guilty of all seven counts, has fixed 4pm to declare the IPOB Leader’s sentencing.
The Federal Government has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to impose the death penalty on Nnamdi Kanu following his conviction on all seven terrorism-related charges brought against him.
The request was formally made on Thursday by the government’s lead counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), shortly after Justice James Omotosho found Kanu guilty on all counts.
The conviction followed a lengthy trial in which the prosecution presented recordings, statements, and broadcast materials it said proved Kanu’s involvement in inciting violence and directing attacks against security personnel.
Addressing the court moments after the verdict was delivered, Awomolo argued that the gravity of Kanu’s actions warranted the harshest punishment available under Nigerian law.
He insisted that the offences for which Kanu was convicted were not minor or isolated incidents but formed part of what he described as a dangerous and destabilising pattern of conduct.
The senior lawyer asserted that Kanu had committed “many illegalities” and should therefore not be afforded leniency by the court.
