The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 29, 2025, for hearing in the suit filed by the police against activist, Omoyele Sowore and other conveners of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.

Naijaonpoint reports that the matter, which was earlier scheduled for Monday, could not proceed after protesters stormed Abuja that day, disrupting activities at the Federal High Court.

Justice Mohammed Umar had earlier granted an interim order restraining Sowore and his co-conveners from holding demonstrations in sensitive areas of the capital city.

The order specifically barred protests around Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

The judge also shortened the time for respondents to respond to the motion, initially scheduled for October 20, to a fresh adjournment on October 29.

The ex-parte motion, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025, was filed by police counsel Wisdom Madaki on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Respondents listed include Sowore, Sahara Reporters Ltd, Sahara Reporters Media Foundation, the Take It Back Movement (TIB), and “unknown persons.”

In an affidavit, Bassey Ibithan, a police officer attached to the Directorate of Legal Services, Force Headquarters, claimed the protest could threaten national security if not checked.

Kanu Lawyer, Others Arrested During Protest

Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), had mobilised for what he described as a peaceful protest to demand the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, on October 20.

During the demonstration, several protesters were arrested, including Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and his brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, who are expected to be arraigned on October 24 at a Magistrate Court in Kuje.

In a separate incident, Sowore was whisked away on Thursday from the Federal High Court premises by armed policemen after appearing for Kanu’s ongoing trial.

When questioned on the grounds for his arrest, one of the officers told him, “The commissioner of police said we should bring you to the office.”

Although Sowore queried the absence of a formal invitation, he was taken away in a police van after insisting his lawyer accompany him.
