WATCH THE VIDEO HERE Justice Musa Suleiman Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, in the sum of N10 million with one surety of the same amount. As part of the bail conditions, the court ruled that the surety must have verified landed property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while Sowore must deposit his passport with the court and provide an affidavit of means. The bail ruling came after Sowore’s legal team, led by Abubakar Marshal, applied for an extension of time to meet the conditions. The court granted a 24-hour extension for compliance, adjourning the matter to Thursday, January 30, 2025. Sowore, who is facing 16 cybercrime charges filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, was detained at the Nigerian Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Abuja after voluntarily honoring a police invitation. The charges stem from his reference to the IGP as an “Illegal IG.” His lawyer had urged the court to grant him bail on self-recognizance, arguing that his client had honored the police invitation in good faith. The prosecution, however, opposed the application. After hearing both sides, the judge ruled in favor of bail but maintained the passport submission requirement. Reacting to the ruling, Sowore took to X (formerly Twitter), stating: “They granted the ‘bail,’ but I am not going to be bailed out by a corrupt civil servant at level 17 or 16. They got the memo and took the condition off their table. Even then, they still targeted my international passport, but that too they will never have! #RevolutionNow” The case has been adjourned to April 8, 2025, for further proceedings.
