*Warns of Escalating Matter to German Authorities as Defendant Evades Proceedings

A Federal High Court in Benin City has ordered the issuance of bench warrants against Jessica Iguodala Oghomwen and Akpes Omorodion, the first and second defendants in a case involving the alleged suicide of Mrs. Lilian Omokhuale, daughter of Chief Omoruyi Oloton, CEO of Uyi Technical Limited. The incident occurred on October 7, 2022.

During Tuesday’s proceedings in the case, marked FHC/B/5C/2004, Justice B.O. Quadri expressed frustration over the absence of the first, second, and third defendants, describing the delays as a “circus show.” The judge criticized both the defense and prosecution for what he called flimsy excuses.

Prosecutor P. O. Odion applied for bench warrants against Oghomwen and Omorodion and informed the court of an amended charge reducing the number of defendants to four. Counsel for the first defendant, O. I. Asenoguan, apologized for Oghomwen’s absence, stating that she was in Germany and unable to return due to limited leave from work. However, Justice Quadri dismissed the excuse, citing the lack of medical evidence on record.

Counsel for the third defendant, U. T. Udochi, explained that his client had missed a flight from Abuja after attending a conference of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. The judge deprecated the defendant’s action, stating that he had the luxury to attend a conference while a serious charge was pending.

Douglas Ogbankwa, representing the nominal complainant, stressed the importance of efficient justice delivery and fairness to the victim, defendants, and society. He emphasized that court business is a serious matter and not a “tea party or child’s play.”

The case, which initially had six defendants, including Chukwudi Mudiaga, Joy Noren, Vincent Uhunmwangho, and Blessing Jatto, has been adjourned to February 4, 2025, for further mention.
