“Court Validates Ogun Speaker’s Removal” — Oluomo Loses Bid To Challenge Assembly’s Decision

Justice Olugboyega Ogunfowora, in a thorough and well-researched judgement, upheld the Assembly’s right to regulate its internal affairs in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

All questions raised in Oluomo’s petition were resolved in favour of the defendants — the current members of the Assembly under Speaker Oludaisi’s leadership.

The judgement brings to a close, the controversy surrounding Oluomo’s impeachment, which was carried out by 22 members of the 26-member State Assembly and as well affirmed Elemide, as the Speaker of the Assembly, putting an end to months of legal uncertainty.

The ruling effectively settles the controversy surrounding the Assembly’s decision on January 23, 2024, to remove Oluomo from office, affirming the legal process followed in the action.

It would be recalled that Oluomo was allegedly removed due to gross misconduct, which borders on high handedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance and poor leadership style, financial misappropriation and inciting members against one another.

With the court’s decision, the legitimacy of Hon. Oludaisi Elemide’s appointment as the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly has been reaffirmed.

Elemide, a member representing Odeda State Constituency, was nominated by Hon. Adegoke Awoso and seconded by Ademola Adeniran. His election was supported through physical voting by all 22 lawmakers present at the plenary.

Before he was elected Speaker, Elemide had served as a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly for three terms, starting from 2011.

He has also held various positions, including Transition Chairman of Odeda Local Government Area in 2003.

Elemide’s background is rooted in education, business, and politics.

He holds a degree in Architecture and has worked as a teacher and architect before venturing into politics.
