Crisis Hits Nasarawa APC As Ward Suspends State Chairman, Aliyu Bello

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State was thrown into fresh turmoil on Tuesday after the party’s Gayam Ward in Lafia Local Government Area announced the suspension of the State Chairman, Aliyu Bello, for alleged anti-party activities.

Naijaonpoint reports that the decision came barely hours after leaders of the party across the state passed a vote of confidence in Bello at an emergency meeting held in Lafia, the state capital.

Addressing journalists in Lafia, the Chairman of APC in Gayam Ward, Ibrahim Ilyasu, disclosed that the unanimous decision was reached by the ward executives, citing a breach of the party’s constitution.

“In line with the powers vested in us under Article 21 (D) (i)-(iii) of the APC Constitution, and after wide consultation with stakeholders within the ward, we have resolved that you, Hon. Aliyu Bello, are hereby suspended from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect,” Ilyasu declared.

The ward executives accused the embattled chairman of engaging in anti-party activities by allegedly supporting and campaigning for an aspirant from another political party, which they say brought “ridicule and disrepute” to the APC.

“We have credible evidence and reports that you have openly promoted and campaigned for a member of another political party,” Ilyasu said, referencing Article 21 (0) (ii) and (vii) of the APC constitution, which prohibits actions that could bring the party into hatred, contempt, ridicule, or disrepute.

The ward leadership further warned Bello to cease parading himself as a member of the APC in Gayam Ward until the matter is resolved.

“Your actions have caused embarrassment to the party, undermined the credibility of our collective efforts, and constitute a serious breach of party loyalty and discipline. We urge you to refrain from parading yourself as a member or official of the party pending the conclusion of this process,” the ward chairman warned.

Reacting to the development earlier in the week, the APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Otaru Douglas, alleged that a governorship aspirant in the state was sponsoring a plot to remove Aliyu Bello through orchestrated suspensions.
