Cross River RSIEC Chairman Announces August 30th For Rescheduled Rivers LG Election

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, (RSIEC) on Monday announced that a fresh local government election will be held in the state on August 30,2025.
Recall that the Justice Adolphus Enebeli led RSIEC appointed by the former governor of Rivers State and now FCT minister, Nyesom Wike had conducted election into the 23 local government areas in the State on October 5, 2024.

However following the cancellation of the election by the Supreme Court, a fresh election was fixed by RSIEC for August 15, 2025.

But while the Justice Enebeli led commission was putting things in place for the new election, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state and appointed a Sole Administrator in place of the State governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibokete Ekwe Ibas (rtd) in the exercise of his duties dissolved all boards and commissions set up by the suspended governor.

Among the commissions dissolved was the RSIEC led by Justice Enebeli, and in its place, a new electoral commission led by Cross River born Michael Odey was empaced.

Odey who addressed stakeholders at the commission’ s headquarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt while releasing the time table for the election said that expression of interest by political parties for participation in the election will begin from Monday 28 July 2025 and end on July 30.

He said that submission of venue, date and time for party primaries will begin from July 31 and end on August 1, 2025, while political parties are to hold their primaries on Saturday August 2, 2025.

According to the RSIEC chairman, issuance of nomination forms to candidates who emerged from the primaries will hold from 5th to 6th August , while screening of the candidates will take place from 8 to 9 August

Campaigns by political parties will begin on August 11 and end on midnight of August 28.
