CUPP has slammed APC over attacks on opposition leaders and defended Peter Obi’s track record.
NaijaOnPoint Nigeria reports that the Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC) for what it described as a campaign of calumny targeted at opposition figures, particularly former Anambra State governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
National Secretary of the CUPP, Peter Ameh, made this known on Monday while responding to a statement by the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Mouka, who had labelled prominent opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi as “confused” politicians with “insatiable appetites” for power.
Mouka, in his statement, also accused the opposition bloc of attempting to upend Nigeria’s zoning and power rotation principles between the North and South.
However, CUPP’s Peter Ameh also a chieftain of the Labour Party described the APC’s remarks as “a desperate attempt to deflect from its gross incompetence in governance.”
In a strongly worded statement, Ameh defended Peter Obi’s leadership track record and policy advocacy, insisting the former governor has “consistently championed reforms that prioritize accountability, transparency, and people-focused development.”
“The recent statement by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Mouka, alleging that His Excellency Peter Obi has ‘nothing to offer Nigeria’ and accusing him of hypocrisy is a gross misrepresentation of facts and a desperate attempt to discredit a proven leader,” Ameh said.
He noted that Obi’s economic and social policy positions are well documented, especially his call for prudent government spending and targeted welfare protections for vulnerable Nigerians.
“His stance on fuel subsidy removal, for instance, has always emphasized the need for strategic mitigation measures, unlike the abrupt and poorly managed approach of the current administration, which has only deepened poverty and hardship,” the statement added.
CUPP also criticized the APC for allegedly focusing on smear campaigns instead of delivering on the promises it made to Nigerians.
“It is disheartening that the APC, rather than addressing the pressing challenges facing Nigerians, chooses to expend energy on smear campaigns against opposition leaders. Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented economic difficulties, yet the ruling party has little to show for its two years in office,” Ameh said.
He called on Nigerians to remain focused on demanding accountable governance and not be distracted by political propaganda.
“Peter Obi remains committed to a vision of a prosperous Nigeria, built on accountability, inclusive growth, and people-centered policies. We urge Nigerians to disregard the APC’s distractions and focus on the urgent need for leadership that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens.”
