The Federal Government has begun a new process to allow personal cars brought into Nigeria by international travellers to move freely for a limited time.
Naijaonpoint reports that the plan is being carried out by the Nigeria Customs Service for people coming into the country for tourism, business, diplomatic duties, or personal visits.
According to the Service, the policy covers only private vehicles that are not used for commercial purposes.
It is meant to ease movement across borders and support Nigeria’s role in regional and global trade cooperation.
The move is backed by the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and several international agreements on temporary vehicle entry.
Travelers entering Nigeria with their cars must present valid papers at the border, including an international passport, driving license, vehicle registration, insurance, and a Carnet de Passages document.
Once checks are completed, Customs will issue a Temporary Vehicle Admission Permit.
This permit can last for up to 90 days, and an extra 30 days may be granted on request.
Vehicles allowed under this system can move within the country during the approved period but cannot be sold, rented, transferred, changed, or used for business.
Travelers must present the car and Customs documents when leaving Nigeria.
If there is an accident, theft, or breakdown, the nearest Customs office must be informed for records and guidance.
The Nigeria Customs Service said the measure is aimed at making lawful travel easier while keeping proper control of vehicle entry and exit across Nigeria’s borders.
