Cyberpunk 2 Job Listing Hints at Online Multiplayer and Network Features

CD Projekt Red has just posted a job listing hinting at two major features being added to Cyberpunk 2. A direct sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is one of many projects currently in development at CDPR, and there is still very little known about this gritty RPG follow-up.

A job listing for a “Lead Network Engineer” was recently posted on the CD Projekt Red website, and it is specifically for Cyberpunk 2. The job description states that the candidate and their team will be tasked with “designing and implementing the network architecture and online systems,” hinting that Cyberpunk 2 could have online and/or multiplayer features.

Cyberpunk 2 Could Have Online Multiplayer

The First Game Didn’t Have Any

The original Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t have any sort of online multiplayer, though CDPR initially planned to add it post-launch. However, this was scrapped in the wake of Cyberpunk 2077‘s disastrous initial launch and the increased efforts to fix its many issues in the years to follow.

Previous rumors have suggested that CDPR is looking to rectify this in Cyberpunk 2, and sure enough, there was another job listing last year for a “Lead Network Programmer” to work at the developer’s Boston Office. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Cyberpunk 2 will have multiplayer, as these positions could be meant to work on other network features.

Cyberpunk 2’s Rumored Online Functions Have Potential

Multiplayer Cyberpunk Fights And Online Cosmetic Shops

Cyberpunk is filled with high-tech gangs and aspiring criminals, and this would lend itself well to online multiplayer. Perhaps players could team up to perform heists or battle against each other, just like in GTA Online. Vehicle races and other competitive game types are also possible in Cyberpunk 2‘s gritty open-world landscape.

Even if Cyberpunk 2 doesn’t have any kind of multiplayer, there could be other interesting online features. Players might be able to share custom cosmetic items through a community creations suite, not unlike the ones in the WWE 2K series. That being said, the new CDPR job listing does mention matchmaking, so some sort of competitive multiplayer could be planned.

While Cyberpunk 2 doesn’t have any official release window yet, Keanu Reeves recently expressed interest in repraising his role as Johnny Silverhand in the sequel. Other rumors suggest that Cyberpunk 2 could leave the first game’s Night City setting in favor of another troubled metropolitan area.
