The days of wondering how the DC Universe will end are officially over, now that Darkseid’s total victory, including the death of Earth’s greatest heroes, has been revealed.

It is certainly not the surprise ‘knockout’ readers expected from the first issue of DC K.O., launching a massive superhero fight tournament intended to prevent Darkseid’s total domination. But unlike previous “Crisis” events in DC’s history, this one is starting with a total loss, for which Earth’s heroes are totally unprepared.

Even before the colossal bracket tournament can get under way, DC K.O. begins by confirming Darkseid’s destiny as the killer of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and more.

The publisher has long teased the return of the god-tier Darkseid to the main DC Universe, unleashing unthinkable carnage across the planet. But the reality is even more brutal, revealing Darkseid’s cosmic power allows him to attack every single location and hero at once, across reality. At which point, it’s no wonder he kills Batman with a single blast.

That bombshell is immediately followed by the death of Wonder Woman, leaving Superman as the last member of DC’s trinity standing. While that may have been predictable, the sudden murder of Superman is not. Thus completing Darkseid’s “Absolute” mission to completely dominate the main DC Universe: the heroes lose, the Lord of Apokolips wins… and it wasn’t even close.

Since the actual event needs living heroes to take place, DC K.O. #1 rewinds the clock by one week, thanks to the chronologically gifted “Quantum Quorum” who inform the Justice League of this impending future. And just to be perfectly clear, these cosmic spectators confirm that these events are the unavoidable future.

The arrival of Darkseid which sees all human, superhuman, alien, and magical warriors fall in one massive battle is not shown to the assembled heroes as a warning, not a possible future, or a vision of what might transpire. It is the inescapable fate and destiny of the main DC Universe fans know and love. In that context, the ‘winner take all’ tournament being hyped by DC should carry a completely different tone.

After all, the massive DC K.O. event is no longer a brilliant and brutal method of powering-up one hero, chosen as one combatant to fight Darkseid in place of many. This is a last-ditch, longshot, and undeniably desperate attempt to change a future already written into the fabric of the universe. A darker event, surely, than any fan had reason to suspect.
