THE Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, made a notable appearance todat at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held by the Julius Abure-led faction of the party in Abuja.
The Labour Party has been facing internal turmoil, with two factions emerging—one led by Abure and the other by Nenadi Usman.
Most of the party’s elected officials, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, presidential candidate Peter Obi, and Baba-Ahmed himself, have been associated with the Usman faction.
Speaking at the meeting, Baba-Ahmed stated that his presence was motivated by a desire to promote peace and reconciliation within the party.
“I am here as a peacemaker, and I seek to reconcile differing opinions,” he told party members.
He also addressed reports about his participation in meetings involving a broader opposition coalition.
Baba-Ahmed confirmed attending those gatherings but clarified that he remains committed to the Labour Party.
“I’m proud to say I joined discussions aimed at building a coalition. If your community invites you to discuss security, morally, you should attend. But if other matters arise, you have every right to return to your original position. I have done so and reaffirm my membership with the Labour Party,” he explained.
His attendance was warmly received by the Abure-led NEC, which applauded his efforts to unite the party amid ongoing divisions.
The meeting marked a significant step in bridging the gap between the rival factions and raised hopes for internal reconciliation ahead of future political engagements.
