David Harbour Sets Post-Stranger Things Role In Courteney Cox-Directed True Crime Thriller

Ahead of Stranger Things‘ final season being released, David Harbour has been cast in a new project. Harbour reprises his role as the fan-favorite character Jim Hopper in Stranger Things season 5. The first four episodes come to Netflix on November 26, the next three on December 25, and the series finale on December 31.

Deadline now reports that Harbour has been cast in Evil Genius, a true crime thriller directed by Friends and Scream star Courteney Cox. The film is inspired by Netflix’s 2018 Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist true-crime docuseries about the “pizza bomber” case. I’ve been fascinated by Evil Genius since I first saw the documentary. It’s stranger than fiction. At moments darkly funny and yet deeply emotional. A story about love, loneliness, manipulation, and the people on the fringes who get pulled into something much bigger than themselves.

In addition to Harbour, Evil Genius‘ cast includes Severance stars Patricia Arquette and Michael Chernus, Garret Dillahunt (Deadwood), Owen Teague (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist), Danielle Macdonald (Lady Bird), Gregory Alan Williams (The Righteous Gemstones), Tom McCarthy (The Lowdown), and Harlow Jane (She Came to Me).

Along with directing the project, Cox is attached as a producer alongside Jason Bateman’s production company Aggregate Films. Filming has already begun in New Jersey.

Evil Genius will dive deeper into the true story behind the attempted bank robbery that led to pizza deliverer Brian Wells being killed by the detonation of an explosive collar. Netflix’s true crime docuseries on the case was well-received, earning an 80% critical score and 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, Evil Genius becomes the latest David Harbour movie or show he has lined up for after Stranger Things. His most high-profile project coming after Stranger Things is Avengers: Doomsday, where he will reprise the role of Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, which he previously played in Black Widow, Thunderbolts*, What If…?, and Marvel Zombies. Doomsday has already wrapped filming and will come to theaters on December 18, 2026.

The news of Harbour’s Evil Genius casting comes following reports of Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown filing a harassment complaint against him. Neither Brown nor David Harbour has delivered an official statement in response to these reports, nor has anyone else involved with the hit Netflix series.
