Whether you’re a devoted DC Comics fan or a casual reader, everyone knows about The Death of Superman storyline that saw the Man of Steel beaten to death by the monstrous Doomsday. But the time has come to rewrite history, now that Doomsday’s true origins are confirmed. Along with the Kryptonian villain’s true name, as the savior of the universe.
Kryptonians Officially Created Doomsday To Kill Darkseid, Not Superman
‘The Death of Superman’ Was An Accident, Misunderstood For Over 30 Years
It must be said that while modern comics have added new lore to Superman’s death by Doomsday, those pale in comparison to this new rewriting of the event. The official change to canon means not only was Doomsday’s epic battle with Superman a mistake, but Clark was tragically fighting against the DC Universe’s most important future warrior.
The changes begin with the origins of Doomsday, originally explained as a ridiculous experiment to constantly kill, then re-clone, and re-kill an infant until it ‘evolved’ to be unkillable. As the only Kryptonian left to take revenge upon, it was no surprise Doomsday would seek out Superman. But the true purpose of those Kryptonian scientists is now official:
With Darkseid reaching god-level existence in the DC Universe, pieces of Kryptonian history shown in Justice League: The Omega Act Special #1 suggested Doomsday was created to kill Darkseid. Now all theories have been confirmed, with Doomsday’s origin explained by Superman’s own mother Lara in Superman #31.
Having discovered the Kryptonian facility in which Doomsday was created, Lara explains the scale of the project. As Krypton expanded, they heard the same prophecy across space: Darkseid would reach his “Final God” status one day, ending all life. Taking the duty upon themselves, they set to work on a solution: not a weapon, but “a soldier.”
Doomsday is Secretly The “Absolute Champion” of All Life in The Universe
To Defeat Darkseid’s Ultimate Form, Doomsday Was Created As His Direct Opposite
Originally thought to be an another example of the hubrus of Kryptonian genius (which eventually killed the planet), this Doomsday reveal dramatically alters the truth believed by comic readers for 33 years. In a rare twist, Krypton was actually working to save innocent lives, creeating an “Absolute Champion” to defend life from a villain they had never even met.
At the same time, the very nature and abilities of Doomsday are forever changed. Sure, the monster’s inability to be killed made him a nightmare when Superman thought he was a villain. But as a warrior created to kill Darkseid’s ultimate, god-tier powers, they may be the salvation of the entire DC Universe.
