DC Comics is teasing the “lost history” of Superman’s home planet, Krypton. When the Man of Steel consults his archive of Kryptonian records, searching for information that could help with the DC Universe’s latest existential crisis, his holographic back-up of his father, Jor-El, reminds him that “there are pieces of history that were never transcribed.”

Superman #31 is written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Eddy Barrows. It ties in to DC’s current K.O. event, which promises massive changes for the DCU.

In addition to hinting at a hidden history of Krypton, the preview teases that these lost Kryptonian records could hold the key to saving the universe.

“Is it possible that not all of Kryptonian history” was preserved and sent to Earth with him, Superman asks in the preview for Superman #31. “Some information was deemed illegal,” the “simulation” of Jor-El confirms, while also noting that things like personal histories and oral traditions from Krypton did not survive its destruction.

This strikes a resonant chord for anyone who has studied real-world history. More than just being “written by the victors,” history is defined by the records that survive. For human civilization, there is much more lost history than that which modern people have access to. Superman #31 confirms that this is true of Krypton as well.

It also catches Superman in a rare moment of fallibility. He treats his Kryptonian archive like it is complete, the sum total of his people’s existence. Now that Superman knows how much of Kryptonian history he lacks access to, the question becomes: how could he possibly recover this lost knowledge?

In Superman #31, Superman consults the Kryptonian archive looking for information about the villain Darkseid, and the concept of a “King Omega,” which is central to the current DC K.O. crossover. The implication is that knowledge of either might have been “illegal” on Krypton, and was not included in the material that Jor-El was able to send off-world with his son.

In other words, the forgotten history of Krypton could play a role in how K.O. unfolds. The event series promises DC’s latest drastic reordering of its Universe, in which all bets on the outcome are seemingly off. If Superman wants to survive, and save the DCU once more, he might have to find a way to access the seemingly inaccessible.

The full Superman #31 issue can be expected to shed more light on this when it is released. Anytime DC reveals more about Krypton, fans are eager to understand more of the history of Superman’s home planet; now, it seems DC is ready to delve into the depths of Krypton’s past in a big way yet again.
