The new DC Universe will seemingly bring back a major DCEU hero in the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. The new shared universe began with the animated Creature Commandos. However, the DCU Chapter One’s first movie was James Gunn’s Superman, which had a lot riding on it. Thankfully, the film succeeded, ending its worldwide box office run with $616.7 million.
According to a report from Forbes, Superman is approaching $150 million in profit globally, which explains why DC is betting high on the franchise. Gunn will return to Clark Kent’s world next year, when filming begins on the Superman movie sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled for a July 9, 2027, release. With Brainiac as the reported villain, multiple heroes should appear.
During a new interview with GQ, Pierce Brosnan revealed that he heard Doctor Fate, whom he played in Black Adam, will appear in Man of Tomorrow. According to the former James Bond actor, Doctor Fate could be getting a solo project, either a TV show or a movie, as well as turning up in the Superman sequel. Check out the full quote below:
“I’ve heard that Dr Fate was going to have his own show, or his own movie. I’ve heard that he’s going to be in the next Superman. I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much, and I would definitely be open to it.”
Doctor Fate’s return in Man of Tomorrow would be quite the surprise. Brosnan only played the character once, appearing in 2022’s Black Adam. Not only was the movie part of the old DCEU film franchise, but Doctor Fate died in it. That said, Gunn’s DCU has brought back actors from the DCEU in their roles, so Brosnan’s Doctor Fate could follow suit.
The actor could simply be playing a new version of Doctor Fate, and the DCU has even set that up in Superman. One of the DC movie’s biggest Easter eggs was a mural in the Hall of Justice, which showed several heroes who are part of Gunn’s DCU. The mural included a couple of major Justice Society of America heroes: Wildcat and the Sandman.
As such, it would not be that big of a leap to say that the Justice Society of America could be involved in Man of Tomorrow, thus explaining why Doctor Fate might appear in it. After all, Gunn used multiple DCU heroes, the Justice Gang, in Superman. With Brainiac requiring Lex Luthor and Superman to team up, more heroes would likely be needed.
The DCEU originally had bigger plans for the Justice Society beyond their debut in Black Adam. One of Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘ post-credits scenes saw Emilia Harcourt and John Economos, who have joined the DCU in Peacemaker season 2, recruit Zachary Levi’s Shazam to the JSA. Doctor Fate’s teased role in Man of Tomorrow could now revive the team.
