Shilo Sanders Might Be Headed to the NFL — But First, He’s Facing Bankruptcy, Debt Drama, and a Repo Man

Being the son of NFL legend Deion “Prime Time” Sanders comes with perks: fame, fans, and designer drip. But if you’re Shilo Sanders, it also comes with… bankruptcy court, $11 million in debt, and now, the looming threat of getting your Mercedes repossessed.

Yep. You read that right. Shilo, a safety for Colorado football and an NFL Draft hopeful, is in serious financial trouble— and he hasn’t even hit the league yet.

According to court records filed this week, Mercedes-Benz Financial Services is asking the court to let them reclaim Shilo’s 2023 Mercedes-Benz, a $135,000 luxury car he bought just a few months before he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2023. The company says Shilo has missed three months of payments (December to February), totaling $6,877 in missed cash and nearly $97,239 in remaining debt on the car.

Here’s the kicker: The current trade-in value for the car is just under $97,000, meaning even if Mercedes repossesses it, they’ll probably still take a loss.

So why is this happening now?

Well, when Shilo filed for bankruptcy last fall, it triggered something called an automatic stay, which blocks creditors from going after him — for now. But Mercedes is asking the court to lift that stay so they can snatch the Benz back, arguing the car is depreciating, the contract is in default, and they’ve waited long enough.

Whew. But wait — it gets messier.

Shilo’s massive $11 million debt doesn’t come from bad investments or wild spending. It stems from a 2015 incident, when he was just 15. According to court records, he got into an altercation with a school security guard named John Darjean, who later sued him for causing “severe and permanent injuries.” Shilo claimed he acted in self-defense. But when he didn’t show up for the trial in 2022? The court hit him with a default judgment: $11.89 million.

Now, Darjean is fighting to make sure that money doesn’t get wiped away in Shilo’s bankruptcy filing. And Shilo? He’s trying to walk into the NFL with a fresh start — financially and otherwise.

But that fresh start might not include his Mercedes-Benz.

And while some might roll their eyes at a college athlete driving a six-figure car while filing bankruptcy, it’s a stark reminder that celebrity lineage doesn’t always come with financial literacy. A flashy lifestyle is cute until the repo truck pulls up — especially when you haven’t been drafted yet.

Shilo Sanders may still have a shot at an NFL contract — drafted or not. But this week’s headlines are less “future star safety” and more “money mess in motion.”

Let’s hope his team is better at protecting his bank account than that luxury SUV.
