Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere director Scott Cooper has teased sequel plans for the Bruce Springsteen biopic and how it could be possible. The biographical drama sees Jeremy Allen White take on the role of the singer-songwriter, depicting his personal struggles and success while recording his sixth album, Nebraska. Reviews for Deliver Me From Nowhere have been mixed to positive.
Even so, it hasn’t stopped Cooper, who also wrote the movie, from considering the idea of a sequel. Speaking with Variety at AFI Fest, the director revealed hopes to make a sequel to Deliver Me From Nowhere. Citing the real Springsteen’s support of the movie, Cooper explained how there are multiple avenues of the singer’s life that could become films:
If you can make four Beatles movies, you can make a couple of Bruce Springsteen movies. There’s so many chapters in Bruce’s life, in all seriousness, that are quite right for cinematic treatments.
That’s something, quite honestly, that Bruce and I have discussed. I think he really loves this film. He’s loved this experience. I think he feels incredibly comfortable with someone telling a very painful chapter in his life. You’d have to ask him, but I think he’s ready for more.
Cooper’s comparison to The Beatles references four movies about the band directed by Sam Mendes that are currently in development. Each of the four Beatles movies will focus on a member of the group, offering different perspectives of similar events. His comparison speaks to how many stories in Springsteen’s life could be translated onto the big screen.
Springsteen’s life has plenty of potential for movies beyond Deliver Me From Nowhere. With a decades-long career that’s still ongoing, the musician has plenty of snapshots from his life that could become movies. Unlike other music biopic films, such as Elvis or Bohemian Rhapsody, Springsteen’s leaves the door open for more because of its approach to the time period.
The contained storyline of Deliver Me From Nowhere offers the opportunity for a sequel to be made. Given how much Jeremy Allen White’s performance as the musician has been praised, keeping him in the role and telling a story about a later time in the singer’s life would be a potential approach. However, no concrete plans exist as of writing.
If the movie does get a sequel, The Bear star coming back would be just one factor. Springsteen has 21 studio albums, with his latest being 2022’s Only the Strong Survive. If sequels were to center themselves around a particular album, like how Deliver Me From Nowhere focused on Nebraska, it would be a creative way to explore his life.
However, the possibility of a sequel for Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere will depend on its overall box office performance. With a budget of $55 million, a modest performance will be necessary for a sequel to be greenlit. As the film hits theaters this weekend, time will tell if a follow-up is truly in the cards.
