Dennis Quaid has joined the cast of Netflix’s A Dog’s Perfect Christmas, which is based on a book written by the bestselling author of A Dog’s Purpose. The actor previously appeared on Netflix in the 2021 film Blue Miracle, which tells the story of a guardian who tries to save an orphanage with the help of a boat captain.

The cast of the Netflix film A Dog’s Perfect Christmas has been announced, as reported by Deadline. Quaid will star alongside Milo Ventimiglia, Brooke Lena Johnson, Jennifer Tilly, Ethan Loomis, Kathleen Rose Perkins, and Mary Steenburgen.

This is the latest W. Bruce Cameron novel being adapted for the screen. A Dog’s Purpose, which was published in 2010 and centered on a dog being reincarnated, was turned into a film in 2017.

A Dog’s Purpose grossed $205 million on a $22 million budget. Unfortunately, critics panned the movie, which earned a very low 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, money speaks volumes, and Cameron’s sequel novel A Dog’s Purpose received the big-screen treatment in 2019 but only earned $75.8 million at the box office. Its Rotten Tomatoes score improved greatly from the first film, but 53% is still short of the 60% needed to be considered fresh on the reviews website.

Quaid starred in both films as Ethan Montgomery. Ventimiglia, Johnson, Tilly, Loomis, Perkins, and Steenburgen are new to the franchise.

Instead of being released in theaters like A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Journey, A Dog’s Perfect Christmas will be a Netflix exclusive.

Despite there only being two books in the Dog’s Purpose series, A Dog’s Perfect Christmas continues the film franchise and is based on the standalone book that Cameron published in 2020. As a result, it’s unclear if Quaid will be reprising his role as Ethan or if he’ll be playing a brand-new character this time around.

A Dog’s Perfect Christmas will center on a teen and her grandpa who face a family crisis during the holidays alongside the latter’s basset hound.

The upcoming Netflix film will be directed by Cathryn Michon, who co-wrote A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Journey. Once again, she’ll team up with the author to co-write the script, like they did for the first two films.

The producing team includes Dan Angel, Michael G. Nathanson, and Jane Charles, alongside executive producers Cameron, Michon, Stephanie Sperber, and David Steward II.

Quaid has already starred in two films this year: Broke and Sovereign.

Aside from A Dog’s Purpose, Quaid’s resume of films includes The Parent Trap, Great Balls of Fire!, The Rookie, The Day After Tomorrow, Flight of the Phoenix, and The Substance. He earned two Golden Globe nominations for his roles in Far From Heaven and The Special Relationship.
