Some of the motorists who spoke with P.M.NEWS about the flooding on the bridge said they decided to speak out to let the Federal and Ogun State Governments know about their unpleasant experience on the Opic Long Bridge on 6 June 2024 following a seven-hour downpour which caused lagoon-like flooding on the bridge and forced motorists to park their vehicles for hours on the bridge till Lastma officers and police from Lagos arrived the scene to rescue them. The motorists appealed to the agency concerned to mobilise to the Opic Long bridge and clear the dirt blocking the holes rainwater passes through to flow down the bridge each time it rains to avoid constant flooding of the bridge. The motorists praised the General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Mr Bakare Oki Olalekan and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade for their swift response to their distress call. The duo were commended for promptly despatching their men to the long bridge in the night to rescue them from the flooding despite the fact that the Opic Long Bridge is Ogun State territory. They said the quick response by the Lagos LASTMA and the Police saved them from being attacked by robbers and kidnappers prowling the bridge. According to Mr John Omenai, a bus driver plying Lagos-Mowe in Ogun State stated: “I thank the Lagos LASTMA Officers and the Police for coming to our rescue on time on the 6 June 2024 to rescue us from the Opic flooded long bridge despite the fact that the area is Ogun State territory. “Motorists were going home that day after hours of heavy rain and on getting to the Opic Long Bridge, all the motorists parked their vehicles on the bridge looking for help to pass the flooded bridge. “They started calling emergency agencies, but no response until a team of Lastma officers led by Mr Odedina and Mr Caleb arrived at the scene and quickly entered the flood to locate a safe path for motorists to continue their journey home. “I thank the LASTMA and the Police for changing the negative mindsets of motorists about their operations with the patriotic and selfless service they rendered to motorists that day.” When P.M.NEWS contacted the CP Lagos, Adegoke Fayoade and the LASTMA boss, Mr Bakare Oki about the Opic Long Bridge flooding, they confirmed the incident and said that they responded to the torrents of distress calls from motorists who were stranded on the bridge that day to save lives first and not about territory or jurisdictions.
