President Donald Trump confirmed that somebody from Sean “Diddy” Combs’ camp reached out to him to request a pardon, but the following day, his legal team seemed confused as to who made the call.
Nicole Westmoreland, an attorney on Diddy’s defense team, seemed to confirm that they had reached out.
“It’s my understanding that we’ve reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon,” she said, according to CNN.
She also weighed in on Diddy’s thoughts on Trump freeing him from prison.
“He is a very hopeful person, and I believe that he remains hopeful.”
But PEOPLE spoke to an insider who denied that Diddy’s legal team had reached out to Trump.
“People in Diddy’s world and orbit are reaching out to his administration for a pardon, but not his legal team,” the insider said. “They have nothing to do with it — but they are aware it’s happening.”
Diddy was sentenced on two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted of charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking and is facing a maximum sentence of 20 years. He is scheduled to be sentenced October 3.
