Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has approved the appointment of Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer as the new Head of the Civil Service of the state.
Naijaonpoint reports that the appointment, announced in a statement on Tuesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, takes effect after the retirement of Barrister Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema on August 31, 2025.
Dr. Sawyer, until his new role, was a Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Health.
Born on May 14, 1970, in Odi community, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, Sawyer began his educational journey at Town School, Okrika, Rivers State, and proceeded to Okrika Grammar School where he completed his West African School Certificate in 1986.
He later gained admission into the University of Port Harcourt in 1988 and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
Sawyer joined the Bayelsa State Civil Service on June 8, 1998, as a Medical Officer.
The new HoS has pursued several postgraduate qualifications, including a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) at the University of Lagos in 2000, and a fellowship at the National Post-Graduate Medical College, Lagos, in 2005.
In 2010, he obtained a Part 2 Fellowship in Public Health at the same institution. He has also defended his dissertation at the faculty level for a Ph.D in Clinical Sciences and Public Health at the Niger Delta University.
Naijaonpoint understands that beyond his medical and administrative career, Sawyer is a member of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), a position that underscores his involvement in national policy and leadership training.
Governor Diri, while congratulating the new appointee, urged him to bring his wealth of experience to bear in strengthening the civil service.
According to the statement, the governor emphasised that Sawyer’s appointment was based on merit and a recognition of his years of service and dedication to the state.
