The nomination of Associate Professor Timothy Yangien as a commissioner by Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has sparked division among former students of the Benue State University, Makurdi.

Naijaonpoint learnt that a faction of the university’s law faculty alumni petitioned the state House of Assembly, rejecting Yangien’s nomination.

The group accused the nominee of abuse of office, oppression, and inhumane treatment of students during his tenure as a lecturer.

According to Channels Television, one of the petitioners, Kamo Sende, claimed Yangien’s elevation to a higher office could provide him “another opportunity to abuse his position.”

In a counter-petition, another group of alumni, led by Bemgba Iortyom, defended the commissioner-nominee, describing him as a man of “unimpeachable character, strength, and drive for excellence.”

The group urged lawmakers to disregard the allegations, insisting Yangien had consistently demonstrated integrity and professionalism throughout his career.

As of press time, it was unclear whether Governor Alia would withdraw Yangien’s name following the controversy or allow the state House of Assembly to decide the nominee’s fate.

Naijaonpoint reports that Benue State governor, Hyacinth Alia, appointed eight new commissioners last Friday.

Alia submitted the list of eight commissioner-nominees to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.

The names were forwarded days after the governor dissolved the previous executive council, leaving only the office of the Chief of Staff, which is now held by Moses Atagher, a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

The fresh nominations are part of a plan to reconstitute the state cabinet.

A second list of nominees is expected to follow soon.

The first batch of nominees includes Theresa Odachi Ikwue, Benjamin Ashaver, Adamu Margaret Ijaguwa, Peter Oboh Egbodo, Yangien Timothy Ornguga, Denis Iyaighgba, James Dwem, and Paul Ejeh Ogwuche.
