Djimon Hounsou is speaking through legal action after alleging he was the victim of domestic violence involving his former partner.
The Atlanta Police Department confirmed that Hounsou’s ex, Riza Simpson, was arrested on January 16 following an incident reported to have occurred on December 2. Simpson, who shares two children with Djimon Hounsou, faces charges of obstruction and simple assault related to family violence.
According to a police report, Hounsou told officers he had asked Simpson to leave his residence after giving her notice to vacate. Hounsou is an Oscar-nominated actor known for Blood Diamond and Gladiator.
“He does not want her to be at the residence,” the report states, noting that the two had lived together for several years while raising their children.
The situation escalated as Hounsou attempted to leave the home. He told police that Simpson blocked his car in the garage and struck him in the face with a closed fist. Officers documented redness and swelling around his left eye. Hounsou reportedly informed police that he had recently undergone eye surgery, making the alleged contact especially concerning.
Hounsou said the children were upstairs at the time and did not witness the encounter. He later went to a precinct to formally report the incident.
Police listed Hounsou as the victim and advised him on how to seek a temporary protective order. The obstruction charge stems from allegations that Simpson provided false information and refused lawful commands.
