A day after Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found dead in their Los Angeles home, President Donald Trump addressed their deaths on Truth Social, calling them a “very sad thing.” This, however, was interjected with the assertion that Reiner was responsible for the tragedy due to his “Trump Derangement Syndrome” or TDS.
Trump talked about the Reiners in a Truth Social post on December 15, just hours after their bodies were found. He labeled Rob “tortured and struggling,” albeit a “once very talented movie director and comedy star.” However, the “pleasantries” were interrupted by his TDS theory.
The President asserted that Rob and Michele’s deaths were caused by the “anger” Rob had caused because of his “incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” He added that this “raging obsession” had driven people crazy.
Furthermore, Trump pointed out that Rob’s “disease” had reached new heights as his administration had “surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness.” He then stated that the “Golden Age of America” is upon us, ending his statement with, “May Rob and Michele rest in peace!“
Rob Reiner had been critical of Trump since his first presidency. In a 2017 interview with Variety, he called Trump “mentally unfit” to be president. Most recently, in an October interview with MS NOW, Reiner warned that Americans “had a year” before the country “becomes a full-on autocracy,” CNBC reported.
Many were quick to criticize Trump’s statement on the Reiners’ deaths. Among them is Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a once advocate of President Donald Trump who recently announced her resignation from Congress:
Rob Reiner and his wife were tragically killed at the hands of their own son, who reportedly had drug addiction and other issues, and their remaining children are left in serious mourning and heartbreak. This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies. Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.
As reported by PEOPLE, citing multiple sources, the Los Angeles Fire Department was first alerted to the heartbreaking discovery at around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 14. Upon arrival, first responders found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead. They were later identified as Rob and Michele Reiner.
As per The New York Times, the Reiners were found stabbed to death in what appears to be a homicide. PEOPLE reported that it was their daughter, Romy, who came across the gruesome scene.
Rob and Michele’s son Nick Reiner has since been arrested in connection with the incident. Jail records cited by the outlet confirm that he is being held in jail on a $4 million bail.
Reportedly, Nick has had a lifelong battle with drug addiction. As previously reported by PEOPLE, he has been admitted to rehab facilities more than a dozen times since he was 15, and he has lived on the streets as well. His struggle was brought to the big screen through Being Charlie, a 2015 film directed by his father.
Rob Reiner, an Academy Award-nominated director, was known for multiple critically acclaimed films such as Stand by Me, Misery, and A Few Good Men. He met Michele, a talented photographer, on the set of 1989’s When Harry Met Sally…, also directed by Reiner.
