The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) army has accused Rwanda of dressing up prisoners in military uniforms to falsely present them as newly captured rebels linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

This comes after Rwanda-backed M23 rebels claimed they had captured fighters from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a militia founded by ethnic Hutus who were involved in the genocide against Tutsis.

However, the DRC military dismissed a video allegedly showing the handover of 20 FDLR rebels at a border crossing, calling it a fabrication.

Meanwhile, M23 rebels continue to advance through eastern DRC, having already seized Bukavu and Goma, the largest city in the region, since launching fresh attacks in January.
