DRC Moves to Prosecute Kabila for Treason and War Crimes Over Alleged Backing of M23 Rebels

The Senate of the Democratic Republic of Congo has voted to strip former President Joseph Kabila of his immunity, opening the door for his prosecution on serious charges including treason and war crimes.

Authorities have accused the 53-year-old former leader of supporting the M23 rebel group, which has seized control of several towns in the country’s mineral-rich eastern region. Officials claim there is a substantial body of evidence — including documents, witness testimony, and other material  allegedly linking Kabila to the insurgents’ operations.

On Thursday, nearly 90 senators voted in favor of lifting his immunity, with only five opposing the move.

Kabila has not yet publicly responded to the latest accusations, but he has previously denied any ties to the M23 group.

The development marks a dramatic turn in Congolese politics, as Kabila served as president from 2001 to 2019 and has long maintained significant influence within the country’s political landscape.
