CABLE television service provider DStv has announced plans to cover all the matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on its sports bouquet SuperSport.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria and 23 other national teams from the continent will be competing in the tournament in December and January.
In an email sent to its customers today, DStv detailed its broadcast plans for the African showpiece.
“Dear Valued Customer, we’re excited to bring you all the action from the upcoming AFCON 2025 tournament, taking place from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026,” DStv wrote.
“As part of our commitment to legal compliance and delivering a world-class viewing experience, we’d like to inform you of an important update regarding channel availability during this period which may or may not impact you.
“What’s changing? Due to CAF’s broadcast licensing requirements, some Free-to-Air (FTA) channels carried on our service will be temporarily unavailable outside their respective home countries throughout the tournament.
“This process, known as geo-blocking, is a standard international practice that ensures broadcasters air matches only within the territories where they hold exclusive rights.
“If your DStv or GOtv package includes SuperSport, you’ll continue to enjoy full tournament coverage without interruption.
“Why is this happening? When granting rights to broadcast the tournament, rights holders such as CAF in this case, always grant broadcast rights subject to certain territorial restrictions (i.e. rights are confined to certain countries and not available in others).
“To comply with our contractual rights grant and to protect our customers and partners from potential legal breaches, we must temporarily restrict access to certain channels in specific regions during the tournament.
“What happens next? We are currently finalising details with the affected FTA broadcasters and will provide further information prior to the start of the tournament.
“In the meantime, we encourage you to check that your subscription includes access to SuperSport, so you don’t miss a moment of the action. We appreciate your understanding and continued support. Yours sincerely, DStv.”
Some of the free-to-air channels carried on DStv include AIT and NTA.
