THE Ebonyi State Government has approved an increase in the minimum wage for all civil and public servants to ₦90,000, up from the previous ₦70,000. The new wage takes effect immediately, the government confirmed.
This decision followed the Executive Council meeting yesterday, August 27, 2025, at the New Government House in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The announcement was officially communicated through a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Ikeuwa Collins-Omebeh.
The wage adjustment aligns with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s “People’s Charter of Needs Agenda,” which prioritizes the welfare of state workers.
The government emphasized that the increase reflects its commitment to improving living standards for civil servants.
In addition to the wage hike, the state government also approved the establishment of the Ebonyi State Virology Research and Innovation Centre.
The facility is expected to enhance the state’s capacity for research, diagnosis, surveillance of viral diseases, and training in line with public health needs and global scientific developments.
The move follows similar actions by other states, such as Imo, where Governor Hope Uzodimma recently raised the minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦104,000 after consultations with labour leaders.
These state-level adjustments build on the national minimum wage law, signed by President Bola Tinubu in July 2024, which set the floor at ₦70,000.
With this adjustment, Ebonyi joins several states taking proactive steps to ensure fair compensation for civil servants, reflecting a growing focus on workers’ welfare across Nigeria.
