WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ebonyi State has declared an indefinite strike in seven local government areas following the non-payment of four months’ salaries to some teachers. The affected LGAs are Ebonyi, Edda, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ivo, Ishielu, and Ohaukwu. The union confirmed in a statement signed by NUT Secretary, Bassey Asuquo, that despite previous notifications and mobilization efforts, several local government chairmen failed to clear the outstanding salaries of its members. The union stated that the strike action was necessary due to non-compliance with previous directives. The NUT has given the directive that both state and branch officers in the affected areas strictly enforce the strike from 12:00 a.m. today, calling all members to remain steadfast in their demand for payment. Reports reveal that pupils who arrived at school this morning were sent home by teachers and union officials enforcing the strike. Speaking on the situation, the Commissioner for Education, Paul Nwobasi, stated that he had earlier called for a meeting with local government chairmen and union executives to resolve the matter, but the NUT representatives failed to attend, making it difficult to reach a resolution. He noted that another meeting has been rescheduled for tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., expressing hope that the union would engage with the government to address their grievances.
