PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu today emphasized in Abuja that the interests and welfare of the citizens in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger are top priorities for ECOWAS leaders.

He expressed confidence that wisdom and diplomacy would play a crucial role in reintegrating these countries into the commission.

During a State visit from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu, who chairs ECOWAS, pointed out that the leadership in the three nations has shown hesitance in presenting transition programs with specific timelines.

“Our relationship based on mutual respect will persist as we reassess the situation in these countries. I assure you we will not tolerate unconstitutional governance,” he stated.

“We will continue to lead by example. There are innocent citizens who are victims of the military actions. Our approach will focus on diplomatic efforts while ensuring the innocent are not punished.

“We will maintain free movement and trade. Although the transition programs are uncertain, we will not penalize the innocent citizens as they do not hold power,” he added, according to a statement from his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

President Tinubu also told President Steinmeier that ECOWAS remains open to the return of democracy in these nations.

“This is the principle that ECOWAS stands for. We are aware of the challenges faced by the citizens in these countries. As ECOWAS Chairman, I prefer not to personalize issues, and we will leave the door open for collaboration,” he stated.

In response, President Steinmeier commented on the significant impact that reintegrating the three countries would have on the economy and security of the West African region.

“We need to address both bilateral and regional issues. We have recently met with the President of the ECOWAS Commission and understand the importance of regional cooperation, especially as part of the European Union.

“The lack of collaboration among Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso presents serious security and economic challenges. We support ECOWAS’s focus on diplomacy.

“It won’t be straightforward, but you must leverage diplomacy to keep the commission and the region united.

“While working diplomatically to encourage Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso to reconsider their positions, it’s also essential to develop emergency plans for future economic cooperation,” he concluded.
