The Edo State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to former deputy governor, Godwin Omobayo, to return all government property still in his possession.
Omobayo, who was sworn in on April 8, 2024, by then Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa following his nomination by former Governor, Godwin Obaseki, assumed office after the impeachment of Phillip Shaibu. But with Shaibu’s subsequent reinstatement by the courts, Omobayo’s tenure was declared illegal.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s, Fred Itua, said all state assets used by Omobayo during his “brief and illegitimate tenure” must be returned without further delay.
“The government has observed with dismay that several official items, including vehicles, documents, and other state-owned assets assigned to Mr Omobayo, are yet to be surrendered to the appropriate authorities despite multiple formal reminders,” the statement read.
Itua warned that “the continued retention of such property constitutes a clear breach of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets.”
The statement directed Omobayo to return all assets to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government within one week of the release date.
“Failure to comply within the stipulated period will compel the government to direct the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to effect his arrest and ensure the immediate recovery of all state assets still in his possession through lawful means,” Itua added.
The Edo government stressed that no individual, regardless of political affiliation or past office, would be allowed to unlawfully appropriate property belonging to the people.
“This administration, under the leadership of Senator Monday Okpebholo, will continue to uphold the principles of transparency, discipline, and integrity in public service, ensuring that all public officers are held to the highest standards of responsibility and probity,” the statement read.
The government urged Omobayo to comply with the directive and avoid further embarrassment.
