Edo Guber: Adeyanju Sues For Peace Amid Fear Of Violence

As the Edo governorship election draws closer, prominent human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has called for a peaceful, free and fair election to avert looming violence.

In a statement on Tuesday, Adeyanju stressed the need for the police and other security operatives to look out for the interest of the people instead of employing federal powers to subvert their will.

Adeyanju’s message is as a result of the ensuing war of words among the leading candidates.

Tension in the state as a result of the seeming win-at-all cost by the political parties caused the failure of the Rtd General Abdulsalami Abubakar-committee to get all the candidates to sign a Peace Accord last week.

The failure of the Abubakar-led National Peace Committee in the state has become a source of concern for the citizens as they prepare to cast their ballot on September 21.

Adeyanju said as the state “prepares for its upcoming governorship election, scheduled for 21st, September, I charge the Independent Electoral Commission to prioritise the people’s interest and conduct a free, fair, and credible poll.”

He called on the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain loyal to the people, rather than serving the interests of politicians.

“Neutrality and professionalism are crucial in ensuring a peaceful electoral process,” Adeyanju emphasised.

He however criticised the alleged plot by the ruling party to manipulate the election result thereby eliminating the true nature of democracy.

“Furthermore, I condemn the reported plots by the ruling APC to exploit presidential powers to influence the election outcome. Such actions undermine democracy and subvert the will of the Edo people.

“The people of Edo State deserve to choose their leaders without interference or manipulation,” Adeyanju said.
