The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has said that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will recognise and accept the results of the governorship election to be conducted on Saturday.

The governor disclosed this in a post on his official X handle on Thursday following his meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa.

Obaseki said that his main goal was that the Edo people be permitted to freely cast votes for their preferred candidates.

“We are not asking for any favour but are stating that Edo citizens should be free to go to the polls to elect the candidates of their choice. We will accept the outcome of a properly conducted election.

“For eight years, the security forces in the state have been highly cooperative in helping us address security concerns. Together, we have established Forward Operating Bases and designed a digitised security architecture that has made Edo one of the safest states in the nation,” he posted.

The governor while speaking, recognised the efforts of the military in the state, noting that the assurances from the Chief of Defence Staff have reduced the fears they had for the forthcoming election.

“His (Chief of Defence Staff) presence and assurances of peace, security, non-partisanship, and the professional conduct of security personnel in the state have significantly assuaged the fears we previously expressed regarding the intimidation and arrest of members of the PDP by the police.”

The Chief of Defence Staff warned that the efforts of the military should not be compromised.
