THE Edo State Government has announced that more than 300 cult leaders have been arrested across the state in the past year as part of ongoing security operations led by the Special Security Squad.
In a statement released today by the squad’s coordinator, Noah Idemudia, the government confirmed that several buildings linked to suspected cultists had also been demolished.
He reaffirmed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s determination to rid the state of cultism and kidnapping.
Earlier this year, Governor Okpebholo signed into law two major security bills — the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025 and the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law, 2025.
The new laws impose severe punishments: a minimum of 10 years in prison for anyone found harbouring cultists, 21 years for cultists involved in property damage or physical harm, and the death penalty for kidnappers whose victims die in captivity.
Marking the governor’s first year in office, Idemudia said the establishment of the Special Security Squad was part of a broader effort to eliminate criminal networks responsible for cult-related violence and kidnappings that have plagued communities across Edo.
“The Edo State Government has promised tough times for those involved in criminal activities. There is no hiding place for them — the state is no longer a safe haven for crime,” he said.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements or individuals in their areas.
The ongoing operation, tagged “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists,” is a strategic initiative coordinated by the Office of the Principal Security Officer (PSO) to the Governor, working jointly with the Chief Security Officer (CSO) at Government House.
For years, Edo State has battled widespread insecurity, particularly in Benin City, Ekpoma, and Auchi, where cult clashes and kidnappings have been frequent.
Idemudia reiterated that the government’s renewed crackdown aims to restore peace and ensure community safety across all parts of the state.
