The Odyssey cast member Elliot Page reveals at New York Comic Con that reading the script for the upcoming Christopher Nolan epic brought back feelings regarding his time making Inception. Page played Ariadne in the 2010 sci-fi movie, and he’s now set to continue his working relationship with the acclaimed filmmaker in an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, though his exact role remains unknown.
While speaking at the X-Men: Day of Future Cast panel at NYCC with James McAvoy, for which ScreenRant was in attendance, Page reveals that reading the script for The Odyssey was an especially secretive process, and one that was similar to what it was like joining Inception.
The secrecy involved in reading the scripts isn’t the only way the two projects are similar, however, with Page explaining that both start off “big or slightly confusing” in their storytelling before elements begin to converge in an emotionally satisfying way. Check out Page’s explanation below:
“You go to an office, read the script, then you leave. And same when I just read the Odyssey, and it was… I remember it just felt like an engine. Like you get on a ride. And that’s what reading both scripts have felt like. It just takes you in.
And at first things feel maybe big or slightly confusing, and then all these pieces start coming together, but at the core of it, emotionally, and you know. Just these arcs that are so defined and beautiful, sort of despite the massiveness of these projects. And I think that’s been my big takeaways from his scripts, his writing.”
Though Page is careful not to reveal any details about his role in The Odyssey, he does gush about getting the opportunity to work with Nolan again after a positive experience 15 years ago making Inception:
“I was so excited to be asked to come back to work with him. I loved working on Inception, and being a part of that movie, so I was completely jazzed and excited. And I basically went and met with Chris and talked about the part. Then sat in a room and read the script, which obviously was a big yes.
“Sadly, I can’t say much, but it was a joy to come back and to come back now just being more comfortable in yourself.”
Page’s role in The Odyssey has not been revealed yet, but, as with Inception, he joins a star-studded cast. Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, with Tom Holland playing Telemachus, his son. The rest of The Odyssey‘s cast include Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, and Lupita Nyong’o, among others.
For Page, The Odyssey‘s release will follow the end of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix, with Close to You (2023) marking his last feature film. In terms of movie work, Inception still remains the biggest and most successful movie Page has ever been a part of, but The Odyssey has an opportunity to surpass this next year.
As Page alludes to in his comment, the upcoming historical epic will also be quite different from Inception just because of developments in his personal life. It was ten years after the sci-fi film, after all, that Page came out as a transgender man and publicly introduced himself as Elliot.
Inception‘s cast was similarly impressive, but it wasn’t quite as sprawling as The Odyssey‘s, raising questions about just how much screen time Page will have in the film. In his 2010 Nolan collaboration, Page was featured prominently as the “architect” of multiple dream layers, but it’s not clear if his role in their next movie will be as significant.
In any case, Page’s comment is sure to drum up even more excitement for The Odyssey, which is already one of the most hotly anticipated 2026 releases. From the sound of things, audiences should expect a theatrical experience just as big and mind-bending as Inception‘s.
