Emirship Crisis: NNPP Denies Contacting Senate Over Alleged Federal Siege On Kano

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has denied responsibility for a letter sent to the Senate accusing the Federal Government of imposing a siege on Kano State.

In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, the National Chairman of NNPP, Dr. Major Agbo, clarified that the party did not authorize the letter.

Naijaonpoint reports that the party was responding to a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed on June 24.

The letter, titled “Need for NNPP Federal Lawmakers to Make Urgent and Concerted Efforts to End Immediately the Siege on Kano State by Agents of the Federal Government,” prompted NNPP’s reaction.

Dr. Agbo emphasized that Dr. Ajuji Ahmed had no authorization to represent NNPP, describing him as an impersonator who should be apprehended by the Senate.

Agbo explained, “Dr. Boniface Aniebonam is the founder of NNPP, holds the party’s registration certificate, is the chairman of the board of trustees, and a life member of the board. Dr. Agbo Major is the national chairman, and Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday is the national secretary.

“The NNPP’s position is that the Kano Emirate leadership crisis is an internal matter for the people of Kano State, rooted in their culture and tradition. Political party involvement is inappropriate under these circumstances. Our party’s principles remain focused on societal peace, development, and the well-being of the majority of Nigerians.

“The issue is currently before competent courts, and any interference by the National Assembly would further complicate the situation.

“The tension generated by the state government’s actions in Kano requires vigilance and enhanced security to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

“It is crucial for Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Elder Buba Galadima to understand that court orders must be obeyed before any complaints. The procedures to vacate court orders are clear and unambiguous.”

Dr. Agbo further stated that the National Assembly should align with positions that ensure the protection of lives and property in Kano State.

“The NNPP, as a registered political party in Nigeria, is not interested in engaging in any controversy with the Federal Government and its agencies, particularly security institutions. We should be responsible partners and law-abiding citizens for the peace and development of Nigeria. Any representation by the said Ahmed should be disregarded.

“In an ideal scenario, it would be the responsibility of NNPP lawmakers to raise the matter on the floor of the National Assembly. However, since the matter is in court, they should pursue it through legal channels. After all, Gov. Abba Yusuf came to power through the court. NNPP has no role to play because Gov. Abba Yusuf is the governor, not the party.

“We urge Gov. Yusuf to focus on providing quality leadership in Kano and to distance himself from unnecessary tensions in the state. We also appeal to the Senate to disregard the illegal and inappropriate letter from the expelled NNPP members led by Ahmed.”
